Avg. Time on Step Change

The Avg. Time on Step Change card helps you detect significant shifts in the average time spent on a journey step, comparing the last 30 days against a 6 month historical baseline. Large increases or decreases in step time can highlight potential UX regressions, changes in user behavior, or the impact of recent product updates. This card is particularly useful in scenarios like:

  • Spot unexpected slowdowns or speed-ups in step completion

  • Investigate anomalies reported by customers or other analytics tools

The card supports three views: Focused, Detailed, and Contextual, giving you a complete perspective on the data.

Focused View

The Focused View highlights the single step with the largest change in average time compared to the baseline. Step name, average time change in hours/minutes, and percentage change (🔼 for increase, 🔽 for decrease) are displayed.

How it works

  • The system calculates the difference between the average time in the last 30 days and the average time over the previous 6 months.

  • The step with the maximum percentage change is displayed.

For Example: First Buy - New User End - 15 hours (+153.00%)

This means users are now spending 15 hours on this step on average, a dramatic increase of 153% compared to the historical baseline.

Detailed view

The Detailed View expands the insight into a ranked list, allowing you to compare multiple steps.

  • Step Name - The name of the journey step where the change in average time is being measured.

  • Last 6 Months Average - The average time spent on the step over the past 6 months, with the number of profiles in brackets.

  • Last 30 Days Average - The average time spent on the step over the last 30 days, with the number of profiles in brackets.

  • Percentage Change - The difference between the two averages, shown as a percentage with an arrow indicator (🔼 upward arrow for increase, 🔽 downward for decrease).

Steps Order

  • Steps are displayed in descending order by percentage change, starting with the largest positive change at the top.

  • Positive changes are followed by negative changes, listed from the largest decrease to smaller decreases.

  • This order helps you see the biggest shifts, whether positive or negative, right away.

This means that in the last 6 months, the average Add to Cart step duration was 1 minute across 3,030 profiles, but in the last 30 days, it dropped to 1 minute for just 1 profile, representing a -99.63% decrease in engagement for this step.

Contextual View

The Contextual View provides a plain-language interpretation of the metric, helping users understand the significance of the change.

How It Displays

  • A narrative message describing the detected change.

  • The step name and percentage change are dynamic and change based on the data.

For Example: Changes in time spent on a step can signal shifts in user behavior. The largest change is on Add to Cart, with a -99.63% decrease compared to the last 6 months. We calculate this as the difference in average time on a step between the last 30 days and the previous 6 months.

This message updates automatically based on the step with the largest change and its calculated percentage.

Note

 In the UI, Add to Cart and -99.63% are dynamic fields that change depending on the data.

Key Points to Remember

  • The card can show increases or decreases in step time, both of which can be important depending on context.

  • Large increases may indicate slowdowns, confusion, or added complexity.

  • Large decreases may indicate improved efficiency or that users are skipping important actions.

  • For a complete analysis, pair this insight with other Journey Insight Cards such as Step Stall Rate and Step Repeat Rate.
