Segment Builder

Prev Next

The Segment Builder allows you to create a segment based on the data you have captured in the Xponent Data Model for a project.

Selection of Criteria (Channel, Interaction, Journey or Journey Step) is mandatory to enable the dropdown of to enable the dropdown of the Operation and List of Criteria.

To build or create the new segment:

  1. In the Analytics grid, click Segmentation.

  2. Click Create Segment, located on the right side of the page.

Segment Rules

To build a new segment, you must define your Criteria, Operation, and Definition. A combination of these creates the first set of rules for the segment definition.

Note

The segment is not valid until all conditions are satisfied.

You can build the segment with a set of rules and conditions, such as:

Identifier - Has - Email

(Criteria - Operation - Definition)

Or

Identifier - Does Not Have - Email

(Criteria - Operation - Definition)

The table shows the complete set of criteria, operations, and definitions that can be used in the Segment Builder.

Criteria

Operation

Criteria Definition

Journey

Has Started

At least one Journey Start Journey Step of this type exists for this profile
Example: Mortgage Journey start

Has completed

At least one Journey Stop Journey Step exists for this profile
Example: Mortgage Journey end

Journey step

Has taken
Has not Taken

There is at least one instance of this Journey Step for this profile
Example: Mortgage Calculator

Has stalled

This is the last journey step, and there is no further journey step for this profile

Interactions

Has taken
Has not taken

There is at least one interaction of this type for this profile
Example: Clicks on Email

Channel

Has used
Has not used

There is at least one interaction on this channel for this profile
Example: Email channel

Success

In the future, support for Attributes and Identifiers will be available.

Add Criteria

It allows you to add the new criteria to the scenario mentioned:

  • Individual additional criteria.

  • Inside the criteria group.

To add the new Individual additional criteria:

  • Click on the Add Criteria button located on the top right side of the Segment Builder section. The dropdown of the Criteria gets enabled.

Note

Selection of Criteria (Channel, Interaction, Journey or Journey Step) is mandatory to enable the dropdown of the Operation and List of Criteria.

The selected condition will be applicable to the list of configured criteria.

Select the required condition (And \ Or) using the condition toggle button.

Always, new criteria get added at the end of the criteria list.

Add Criteria Group

In addition to adding individual criteria, you can create Criteria Groups to efficiently organize multiple criteria. Criteria Groups allow you to apply logical conditions (And / Or) to multiple criteria collectively, enhancing the flexibility of your segmentation process.

Criteria Groups help in managing complex segmentations by grouping related criteria together. This improves readability and ensures logical consistency in filtering profiles based on multiple conditions.

  • At the top-right corner of the segment builder page, next to the Add Criteria button, click Add Criteria Group. This will create a new group where multiple criteria can be included.

  • Once the new criteria group is added to the segment builder, select the required Criteria from the dropdown. This will enable Operations and allow for further selection from the Criteria List. The selected criteria will be applied to profiles based on the conditions set within the group.

Manage Criteria within a Group

Each Criteria Group functions like a container for multiple criteria, where you can:

  • Add Criteria: Add a new criteria within the group using the gray Add Criteria button at the top-right corner of the group.

  • Remove Criteria: Click on the X icon at the end of the criteria to remove the criteria. If you remove the last remaining criteria from a Criteria Group, the entire group will be deleted automatically, and the indented space for the group will be removed.

  • Delete Criteria Group: Delete a Criteria Group using the gray Delete  Group button.

idea

A criteria group cannot be saved with only one condition/criteria. You must add at least two conditions to create a valid group.

Set Logical Conditions (And / Or)

Within a Criteria Group, you can toggle between And or Or conditions to define how the criteria interact:

  • And Condition: All criteria in the group must be met for the segment to be valid.

  • Or Condition: At least one of the criteria in the group must be met for the segment to be valid.

Similarly, conditions can be set between multiple Criteria Groups to define the relationship between them.

Understanding Logical Conditions

Logical conditions are used to determine how different criteria and criteria groups interact with each other. Here’s how they work:

Channel - Has Used - Web

Or

Channel - Has Used - Facebook

(Criteria - Operation - Definition)

And

Journey - Has Started - Purchase Devices

(Criteria - Operation - Definition)

Group A (Criteria Group): If the Web Channel has been used Or the Facebook Channel is used, then Group A will be included to validate the condition.

Group B (Criteria): If the Purchase Devices Journey has started, then Group B will be included to validate the condition.

Segment Size For This Group

  • If both Group A (20 profiles) and Group B (5 profiles) have profiles that meet their respective conditions, then only this segment will be validated, because the condition between them is set to And.

    • Segment Size: 25 profiles

  • If either Group A (20 profiles) or Group B (0 profiles) does not have any profiles meeting their respective conditions, then the segment will be invalid, and the segment size will be zero.

    • Segment Size: 0 profiles

This allows for flexible segmentation where multiple user behaviors and attributes can be combined efficiently.

Set Date Constraint Filter

The Segment Builder allows users to add optional date and time constraints to each segment criteria. This enhancement enables the creation of dynamic segments, where customer profiles are automatically added or removed based on time-based rules. You can build complex segments with nested conditions and assign specific date constraints at the criteria level. This makes it easier to target customers based on recent activity, fixed periods, or future dates, and simplifies orchestration logic for campaigns and analytics.

The following options allow you to precisely control the time window for the segment. Each filter is designed to address a specific business scenario, making your segmentation both flexible and targeted.

  • Anytime: Includes all available data, with no date restriction. For Example, segment all customers who have ever made a purchase.

  • Last 24 hours: Includes data from the previous 24 hours. For Example, target users who visited your website in the last day.

  • Last_Days: Lets you select a custom number of days (up to 365) from a dropdown. For Example, find customers who contacted support in the last 15 days.

  • Last 7 Days: Includes data from the last seven days. For Example, the Weekly engagement segment for recent survey completions.

  • Last 30 Days: Includes data from the last thirty days. For Example, a Monthly segment for recent purchases.

  • Custom: Enables selection of a specific start and end date. For Example, analyze users who signed up during a campaign period (Aug 1 2024 - Sep 15 2025).

  • Before Date: Includes data before a specified date. For Example, users who registered before January 1, 2025.

  • After Date: Includes data after a specified date. For Example, customers who purchased after October 1, 2025.

  • Week: Filters data for a selected week. For Example, users who interacted with your app during the first week of November.

  • Month: Filters data for a selected month (from the 1st to the last day). For Example, payments made in August.

  • Quarter: Filters data for a selected quarter (Q1-Q4). For Example, customers who completed onboarding in Q3 (July–September). Filters data for a selected quarter:

    • Q1: January, February, March

    • Q2: April, May, June

    • Q3: July, August, September

    • Q4: October, November, December

  • Year: Filters data for a selected year (January 1 to December 31). For Example, users who attended webinars in 2024.

Best Practices for Using Date Filters

  • Choose Relative vs. Fixed Filters: Use relative filters (like Last 7 Days, Last 30 Days, After Date) for segments that need to update dynamically; these will refresh daily and keep your audience current. Use fixed filters (Month, Quarter, Year, Custom) for segments tied to specific periods, which remain unchanged unless the criteria impact segment size.

  • Calculate Segment Size During Setup: Always check the segment size as you build it. Overly complex or restrictive conditions may result in segments with zero customers. Validating size ensures your segment is actionable.

  • Plan for Future Campaigns: You can create segments with future start or end dates. This is useful for preparing audience lists ahead of scheduled campaigns or launches.

  • Key Consideration: Date constraints can only be added to new segments, not existing ones. Segments cannot be edited after creation, so plan your criteria carefully. Segments are currently environment-specific; environment-agnostic segments are planned for the future.

  • Use “Anytime” for Broad Segments: If you want to include all available data, use the “Anytime” filter. This works as it did before the 25.3 release, with no date restriction.

Visual and Functional Representation

  • Criteria Groups are displayed in a gray-colored section to differentiate them from individual criteria.

  • The groups are slightly indented to visually distinguish them from standalone criteria.

  • The conditions applied for a group and between groups ensure that segmentation is logical and easy to manage.

Using Segment Groups, you can create advanced user segments with complex conditions while keeping the segmentation process clear and manageable.

Calculate Segment Size

When you have completed building your set of segment rules, you can click on the Test Segment Size to test if your set of segment rules is returning any profiles.

  • Click Test Segment Size, located at the bottom of the segmentation page.

In the following two scenarios, you can use Test Segment.

This is helpful for you to understand if you have over-constrained segment rules. In this case, you can modify your segment rules before saving the segment definition.

Note

Selection of Criteria, Operation, and Definition from the dropdown is mandatory to calculate the segment size.

Scenario 1: Calculating Actual Profile Count

Scenario 2: Display Actual Profile Count

Save Segment

A segment is not available for analysis until it is saved. Clicking on the Save Segment button will bring up a Save Segment modal.

  1. Enter the name of the segment. Please assign a descriptive name to each segment.

    Note

Avoid the use of “All Customers” as the segment name.

  2. Enter the additional description if available.

  3. It will bring you back to the Segment List view, where your segment will now appear in the list.

A segment cannot be modified once it is saved. You will only be able to delete the segment altogether and create a new one.
