This page explains how Bill Explainer works end to end, from billing data ingestion to the customer experience and analytics — at a conceptual level.
It is intended to help you understand the overall flow, before exploring configuration or individual modules in detail.
1. Input — Billing data enters Bill Explainer
Bill Explainer starts with billing data generated by the billing system.
Each billing cycle, the customer receives a secure, personalized link - delivered via email, SMS, or embedded within client service portals and agent tools. Clients can also generate links programmatically using the Token Generation API for custom integrations. The Conversational Assistant can be embedded in client-owned channels via API. The relevant bill information is securely made available to Bill Explainer so it can be interpreted and prepared for explanation. This data provides the foundation for everything the customer will later see.
2. Processing — Data is interpreted and prepared
Once received, billing data is processed and aligned so it can be explained clearly and consistently.
During this stage, Bill Explainer:
Identifies the current and previous billing periods
Detects changes and differences
Prepares structured information for presentation
Applies the rules and configurations defined by client administrators
This processing step ensures the bill can be explained in a way that is accurate, contextual, and easy to understand.
3. Experience — Customers view and interact with their bill
After processing, Bill Explainer delivers a secure, personalized microsite to the customer, typically accessed via a link from an email or SMS notification.
In this experience, customers can:
Review their bill summary
See what changed compared to the previous bill
Understand charges and adjustments in context
Take relevant next actions when available
The experience is designed to be intuitive, branded, and accessible — without requiring customers to log in or navigate complex systems.
4. Learning — Teams analyze engagement and trends
As customers interact with the Bill Explainer microsite, engagement data is captured and aggregated.
Client teams can use this information to:
Understand how customers engage with bill explanations
Identify patterns related to bill amounts or changes
Monitor usage across channels and time periods
These insights help teams continuously improve the billing experience and better understand customer behavior.
