Mapping Rule Testing enables Admins to check that both predefined and custom data mappings correctly transform the data before they are used during ingestion. By testing how your uploaded XML files will be interpreted and shown in Bill Explainer, this feature helps spot problems early and avoid errors when your bill goes live.
Testing Workflow
Use these steps to test your setup before making it live using the Preview Bill feature to safely validate your mapping configurations.
Save Your Changes
Before testing, ensure that all changes you have made to the mapping are saved in draft mode.
Even if you have made minor edits or simply reverted changes, it is important to click Save.
Drafts let you test changes without affecting what is currently live in Bill Explainer.
This step ensures the preview feature uses the latest saved draft for testing instead of any previously published version.
Publishing a mapping applies it across the system and affects all users. Always validate your draft with test data first.
Open Preview Bill
In the top-right corner of the data mapping editor, click on the Preview Bill (Notepad with eye) icon.
This opens the Preview Bill widget, from where you can open the window to upload the bill files for testing.

Upload XML Files
Click the Upload to Preview button to upload one or two bill files.
Follow these requirements:
Upload each bill as a separate XML file (maximum size: 5 MB). Uploading bills individually ensures accurate comparison and testing during preview. If a file exceeds the size limit, it may fail to upload or be rejected by the system.
You can drag and drop files into the upload area or click on it to browse and select files from your device.
Once selected:
The files will appear on the right-hand side, showing their names and sizes for confirmation.
Click the Upload and Process Now button to see how your data would look in the Explainer.
Behind the scenes:
The system applies your draft mapping to the uploaded XML files.
It transforms the data to match the Bill Explainer model for preview.

Confirmation Message
After processing, a confirmation message will appear. You can now:
Click Open Preview to see how your test bill looks to users through the preview widget, or
Click Dismiss if you prefer to come back and view it later.
Processing may take up to 60 seconds, depending on the file size and complexity.

Bill Preview
Open Preview Widget (either from the confirmation or manually).
Enter the account number associated with the uploaded XML file(s).
This account number is usually found within the XML content.
Click the Open Preview button.
What happens next:
The preview will display the rendered bill based on your draft mapping.
If you uploaded two consecutive bills, the system will show a side-by-side comparison, perfect to spot changes or inconsistencies.
If only one bill is uploaded, it shows the details for that individual bill.

Pop-Up Blocker
If you are using the preview for the first time, your browser may block the new window. To resolve this:
Look for a pop-up blocker icon in the browser address bar. Click on it and select Always allow pop-ups from this site.
Click Done, then re-open the Preview Widget and click Open Preview again.
The account number you last used will still be pre-filled for convenience.

Re-upload XMLs if Needed
To test another bill or a different version:
Click the Upload icon located next to the Open Preview button. This lets you re-upload one or two new XML files for testing.
Repeat the upload and preview steps as needed to validate additional scenarios.
