Wireless Billing Support

Prev Next

Wireless bills are often among the most complex types of statements customers receive. Multi-line accounts, shared data plans, and device installment payments can make it hard for customers to understand what they are being charged for and why.

The Wireless Billing Support feature in Bill Explainer enables handling of wireless billing scenarios through backend logic, data processing, and Workbench configuration. This functionality works only when clients provide wireless-specific variables in their data feed. With this enhancement, Bill Explainer can now retrieve and interpret wireless billing data to clearly explain:

  • Which line is used, and what portion of the shared data plan

  • How much each device installment costs and how many payments remain.

  • Other wireless-specific charges, like plan fees or add-ons.

Client admins can create and configure wireless variables directly in Workbench, ensuring the information is presented in a clear, customer-friendly way in Explainer.

How It Works

  • The client admin maps wireless billing variables in Workbench. For Example: per-line data usage, voice minutes, SMS count, device installment amounts

  • The admin activates relevant settings, such as Shared Data tracking or Device Installments.

  • When the customer opens the Bill Explainer microsite, they see a clear breakdown of usage per line, including voice minutes, data usage, and SMS counts.

  • The bill identifies what has changed, such as an extra GB purchased or a new device charge.

  • The customer can view their current installment balance and remaining payments for devices.

  • This transparency eliminates confusion, reducing the need for support calls and improving customer satisfaction.

Use Case - Shared Plan

Sarah manages a shared family plan with her daughter. She receives a bill that shows they have exceeded the data limit. In the past, her bill simply displayed an extra charge with no details, prompting her to call support.

With Wireless Billing Support enabled:

  • Sarah opens her bill in Bill Explainer.

  • She immediately sees a per-line usage breakdown. For Example:

    • Daughter: 7,000 MB of data, 21 minutes of voice, and 5 text messages.

  • Other lines show their respective usage. She notices her daughter’s higher data usage explains the overage.

  • The bill also shows that Sarah is paying $80/month for her phone plan.

This level of transparency helps Sarah understand the bill instantly, no call to support needed.

Use Case - Usage Itemized

The Usage Itemized view in Wireless Billing Support gives customers a detailed breakdown of their usage, allowing them to filter and sort the data to quickly understand charges.

Note

Availability of filters and sort options depends on the client enabling itemized data feeds.

When a customer opens the Usage Itemized section in Bill Explainer:

  • Filter by Line: Customers can select a specific line from their account to view usage for that line only, ideal for multi-line accounts.

  • Filter by Type: Choose to display only one type of usage:

    • Data - Shows MB/GB used and related charges.

    • Voice - Shows call minutes and charges.

    • SMS - Shows text message counts and charges.

  • Sort Options: Customers can sort the list to quickly find what matters most:

    • Highest - See the most expensive usage items first.

    • Lowest - See the smallest charges first.

    • Oldest - Sort by earliest usage.

    • Newest - Sort by most recent usage.

  • Itemized Usage List: Displays each usage entry with:

    • Date and time of usage with type of usage icon (data, voice, SMS).

    • Amount used (146.362 MB, 15 minutes, 3 texts).

    • Associated cost for that item.

Use Case - Monthly MyTab Charge

The Monthly MyTab Charge feature within Wireless Billing Support visually and textually explains a customer’s device installment plan. Making it easy to understand how much they have paid, how much they owe, and when the plan will end.

Note

MyTab is client-specific and will vary by carrier?

  • At the top, a linear graphical bar shows three key amounts side-by-side:

    • Paid Amount to Date - How much the customers have already paid toward the device.

    • Current Installment Amount - The payment due this month.

    • Remaining Balance - How much will be left after the current month’s payment.

  • Installment Summary - Beneath the bar, a descriptive statement summarizes the payment status in plain language.

For Example: You have already paid $20.00 out of $480.00. The last installment will be on March 14, 2027 - only 23 more installments left.

Detailed Breakdown - Below the summary, the customer sees an itemized list of installment details:

  • Total Financed - The full device cost being financed.

  • Total Paid - Cumulative payments made so far.

  • Total Remaining - Balance still owed.

  • Duration - Total length of the installment plan.

  • Months Remaining - Number of months left to pay.

  • Purchase Date - When the device was bought.

  • Last Payment - Date of the most recent installment payment.

  • Device - The specific device being financed.

This view removes the guesswork around device financing by combining visual progress, plain-language explanations, and detailed payment history.

Key benefits

  • For customers, wireless billing explanations reduce confusion and frustration.

  • For telecom providers, it means fewer support calls, faster issue resolution, and a better overall customer experience.

  • The data model and backend logic built to align, so they can scale to support larger wireless providers and more complex plans in the future.
