Source Path Mapping

Prev Next

Source Paths

The Source Paths section shows all data paths detected from uploaded XML files, manually added paths, and system-defined entries. Bill Explainer automatically extracts available data paths from uploaded XML files and lists them for mapping, reducing manual effort. Each path clearly indicates whether it’s been mapped and to which variable, helping you track and manage data mappings more efficiently.

If any required path is missing from the extracted list, users can manually add it by clicking the Add Path button. Simply enter the new path and click on the (check mark) ✔️ icon to save it.

If the path already exists in the system, a red message labeled Already exists will appear, and the system will prevent it from being saved again. This ensures duplicate paths are not unintentionally added.

Usage Indicators

To help users manage their setup more effectively, each path is labeled with a Used In indicator. These indicators show whether a path is currently used in a variable mapping or remains unused. You can filter the list to show only unmapped paths. Double-click the filter to clear the selection and view all paths again.

Managing and Deleting Paths

Paths that are no longer needed and are not in use can be marked for deletion. However, the system does not allow deletion of any path that is currently mapped. Deleted paths are temporarily moved to the bottom of the list and can be undone using the Undo button within the same session before clicking Save. Once the configuration is saved, these paths are permanently removed from the system.

XML-Extracted Paths

Additional features include the ability to search for paths using keywords and adjust the list view by sorting paths in ascending or descending order. If you’d like to focus specifically on paths that were added via the XML upload, you can use the XML Paths checkbox. Selecting this option will display and highlight all system-extracted paths for easier review, helping you quickly identify what came from the file versus what was added manually.

Source Path Mapping

The Source Path Mapping process allows admins to link XML source paths from uploaded XML files to Bill Explainer data variables for display on bills. This step is essential in ensuring that every piece of billing information, such as user names, bill dates, and payment details, is accurately placed in the correct section of the generated bill. With precise mappings, the system can display clean, structured, and user-friendly content across all bill views.

Within the Data Mapping interface, admins can view available Bill Explainer variables and map them directly to XML source paths. Here, Admins can see a list of Bill Explainer variables that need to be mapped.

  1. Move your cursor over the variable you want to map in the Data Mapping interface.

  2. A + Mapping button will appear next to the variable. Click it to open the mapping window.

  3. Use the search bar in the mapping window to find the appropriate source path from the list of extracted XML data.

  4. Click the desired path to select it. The variable is now successfully linked. Bill Explainer will use this mapping to dynamically populate the corresponding content during rendering.

You can map variables across a wide range of content categories, including:

Mapping Type

Examples

UserU Details Mapping

Name, address, account number

Bill Information Mapping

Bill date, due date

Balance Details

Previous balance, payments, new charges

Generic Section Mapping

Reusable content applicable across multiple sections

Section-Specific Mapping

Targeted sections like usage, charges, or taxes

Generic Item Mapping

Recurring item blocks (For Example: Line items in any section)

Item-Specific Mapping

Customized or detailed items tied to a specific context

Mapping Itemized Variables

Client admins use Workbench to configure and control all wireless-related bill details so they display correctly on the Bill Explainer microsite. Once configured, these settings automatically apply to user bills without further updates.

To access the wireless billing variables, open Workbench from the left-hand menu, go to Data Mapping, and scroll to the bottom of the page. Admins can set up wireless billing features in two main ways:

  • Enable/Disable Toggles - Controls whether specific wireless-related sections are visible in the user’s Bill Explainer bill.

  • Map Variables to Source Paths - Map the itemized variable fields to the source path in the billing system so it can be visible to the Bill Explainer microsite.

  • Line Allowance - Displays per-line usage for data, voice, and SMS.

  • Shared Allowance - Displays the total data/voice/SMS pool available across all lines on the account.

  • Installments - Displays device payment installment details, including amounts already paid, the current installment, the remaining balance, and the number of months left.

  • Itemized - Displays detailed usage and charge records for individual events:

    • Itemized Description - A short label or description for the charge. For Example: International Call, Extra Data Pack

    • Itemized Amount - The monetary value for the specific usage item or charge.

    • Itemized Line (optional) - The line number this usage item applies to in a multi-line account.

    • Itemized Usage Type - The category of usage. For Example: Data, Voice, SMS

    • Itemized Date (optional) - The date the usage occurred or the charge was applied.

Mapping Custom Variables

Once a custom variable is created, it will appear in the Custom Variables section at the bottom of the Data Mapping list. From here, you can map it to a data source so it can be used in Studio for real-time content personalization.

Steps to Map a Custom Variable:

  • In the left-hand navigation panel, select Data Mapping. This section lists all existing variables and their associated source paths.

  • Scroll to the bottom of the list to locate your custom variable in the Custom Variables section.

  • Hover over the required custom variable the + Mapping button will appear.

  • Click on the Mapping button and search for the correct source path from the list.

  • Select the source path, then click on the Save icon.

Once saved, the custom variable will be linked to its data source and available for selection in Studio when creating content.

Benefits of Accurate Mapping

  • Ensures high data accuracy by aligning input fields with predefined categories.

  • Improves the clarity of bill presentation with structured layouts.

  • Reduces post-ingestion issues caused by misaligned data.

  • Supports both generic and highly specific mappings to cover a wide range of bill formats.

  • Enhances the end-user experience by surfacing key billing details more intuitively.
